Resumo

Objetivou-se elaborar uma revisão de literatura sobre a castração pediátrica de cães e gatos e suas implicações para o paciente, a curto e longo prazos, visando subsidiar a propagação dessa técnica entre os médicos veterinários. Apesar de ainda persistir o receio equivocado sobre a adoção desse tipo de castração a longo prazo, fator limitante para sua utilização em larga escala, a evolução das técnicas cirúrgicas e dos protocolos anestésicos, associados aos constantes e recentes estudos, tem demonstrado que a castração pediátrica é uma opção acessível, eficiente e segura para esterilização tanto de machos quanto de fêmeas, principalmente quando empregada no controle populacional de cães e gatos errantes.
