Climatological Study Of The City Of Taquaritinga Do Norte - PE For The Production Of Arabica Coffee Coffea arabica

Abstract

The city of Taquaritinga do Norte,in Pernambuco, has stood out in the state for coffee production, being responsible for producing 70% of the state’s coffee. The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of climate and climatic factors of the Taquaritinga do Norte region on Arabica coffee production. Monthly rainfall data from 1962 to 2020 from APAC were used, as well as coffee production data from 2004 to 2020 obtained from IBGE. The monthly climatology of Taquaritinga was determined, from the historical average from 1962 to 2020, as well as the water balance of Thornthwaite & Mather. The results showed that the rainy period of the region corresponds to the months of March to July, with rainfall above 100 mm, and total annual rainfall above 1000 mm, favoring the production of coffee. The amount of Arabica coffee produced in the period from 2004 to 2010 showed an increase, and from 2010 a decrease in production, which may be associated with rainfall variability and the decrease of rainfall in the same period. It was verified that the months from September to January present water deficiency in the region. In general, the climatic data indicate that the production of Arabica coffee is viable in the region, which will contribute to the local economy.
