Spatiotemporal Patterns of Drought Episodes in the Microregion of Barreiras-BA

Drought is a natural phenomenon resulting from the absence of precipitation during a certain period, capable of causing damage to the development of various activities in society and denoting the most complex and harmful type of natural disaster and has been affecting several regions. To analyze and monitor these phenomena in the most susceptible areas that are highlighted in the national agricultural scenario, several indices are being used, including the Standardized Precipitation and Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), considered one of the most widespread in the world, which allows the assessment of droughts. on different time scales. Therefore, the objective of this work was to identify the spatial and temporal variability of drought events occurring in the Barreiras microregion using time series analysis techniques. A series of monthly historical data on precipitation and air temperature were used for the period 1961 to 2018 from CRU-TS-4.03 reanalyses. The drought was characterized using the Standardized Precipitation and Evapotranspiration Index-SPEI on different time scales (3, 6, 12, 24 and 48 months). The Mann-Kendall and Sen non-parametric trend tests were used to verify temporal patterns for the region. Through the variability of droughts in the region, it was possible to observe the progressive increase in the intensity and frequency of this event on longer time scales, with emphasis on more recent periods. Trend analysis allowed us to verify that all temporal scales analyzed showed significant decreasing trends, that is, an increase in the extreme phenomenon of droughts in the region during the years evaluated.Downloads
