Influence of the National Solid Waste Policy on Environmental Management and Waste Management

Solid waste is all waste in a solid or semi-solid state resulting from domestic, hospital, industrial, commercial and agricultural activities, in addition to sweeping services and sludge from water treatment plants and pollution control equipment. Society and production processes are progressively generating more waste, whether solid, liquid or gaseous, which is commonly discarded inappropriately and without control, causing impacts on the environment. The present work aimed to analyze the effect of implementing the National Solid Waste Policy on environmental management and solid waste management. Based on an integrative review, carried out using the CAPES platform database, using the keywords “PNRS” and “Environmental Management”, works were selected that followed the established eligibility criteria: the publication being available free of charge on the internet in Portuguese and be dated within the last 10 years (2013-2023), entirely related to the topic of interest. The selected articles must necessarily contain in their body a study on the National Solid Waste Policy and its application and answer the guiding question “What is the evolution and current scenario in the scope of environmental management after the implementation of the National Solid Waste Policy in Brazil?”. After analyzing the articles, it was noted that most of the works showed weakness in the application of the principles of the National Solid Waste Policy due to the lack of action by public authorities and the availability of financial resources, especially in small municipalities – which face greater difficulties in adapting to the standards established in the PNRS. In this set of circumstances, solid waste management in Brazil still presents itself as a challenge for public authorities and society as a whole. It is important that the appropriate management of solid waste is taken as a priority to reduce the environmental impacts caused by its inadequate management and disposal.Downloads
