Abstract

In her book, Tornar-se Negro (1983), the Psychiatrist and Psychoanalyst Neuza Santos brings us a series of reflections on the factors of neurosis and other psychic diseases caused to black people in Brazil, due to their compulsions to adjust to the standards aesthetic and behavioral aspects of the white world. In other words, the author carries out an analysis of the effects of anti-black racism in the formation of the subjectivity of black people in Brazil, specifically from the disclosure of the incidence of neuroses and psychic illnesses diverse to the rising black population or in search of social distinction towards the white world.
