Abstract

Abstract. After a brief introduction, I present the first English translation of a text published in 1926 by Judith Teixeira. Although the author of De Mim describes it as a conferência, i.e., some type of public lecture, the subtitle reveals her intention of “setting out” her “arguments concerning life, aesthetics and morality” with a view to defending her modernist poetics and, specifically, her futurist aesthetics, against the attacks of conservative commentators and critics. In so doing, Teixeira feels obliged to systematise her own critique of bourgeois culture and morality. Where necessary, I have added footnotes to the translation either to identify the authorities on whom Teixeira draws in support of her arguments, or to clarify some of the “bizarre” images she deploys in the text, especially in two of her own poems that she quotes in extenso (here also translated into English) to exemplify her modernist poetics. Hopefully, the present translation will allow students of modernism to expand the scope of their researches, and to explore new connections between already-familiar futurisms and the less well-known Portuguese variant.
