About the Journal
Focus and Scope
Medicina Veterinária is a scientific journal from the Department of Veterinary Medicine at the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UFRPE), published quarterly. The journal's mission is to publish original works related to research in Veterinary Medicine, Animal Production, Biology, and related areas in the form of scientific articles, review articles, case reports, and brief communications.
Peer Review Process
The decision to recommend publication will depend on adherence to the Editorial Guidelines, the evaluation by the Section Editor, the reviewers' opinions, and the approval of the Editorial Committee.
Submitted articles will initially be evaluated by the Section Editor, according to the relevant area, and/or the Managing Editor for an assessment of the scientific contribution. Once approved, the articles will be reviewed by at least two reviewers appointed by the Section Editor and/or Managing Editor, and the identity of the reviewers will remain anonymous throughout the editorial process (double-blind peer review). In case of conflicting opinions, the article will be sent to an additional reviewer.
After the peer review process by Ad-hoc Consultants, the authors will receive comments and possible corrections recommended by the reviewers and editors and must respond to each question through a response letter, without identifying the authorship. All changes made to the manuscript text should be highlighted using the "Track Changes" tool in Microsoft Word or by using text highlight colors. The reviewer may receive the article again to verify the corrections made by the authors. After approval by the reviewers and approval by the Section Editor and/or Managing Editor, the editorial decision will be sent to the authors. It should be noted that Editors are not involved in decisions regarding articles authored by themselves or by family members.
The estimated time from submission to approval is around 4 months or as soon as the reviewers have evaluated the submission and we receive a quick response to finalize the evaluation process.
Frequency
Quarterly.

Ethics Statement, Good Conduct Practices, and Misconduct Procedures in Publications
The Veterinary Medicine Journal is dedicated to upholding good practices concerning ethical conduct in scientific journal publishing. To this end, we adhere to the COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) code of conduct. We affirm that the Veterinary Medicine Journal supports ethical behavior standards and expects all parties involved in our journal's editorial process, including the author, journal editor, reviewers, and publisher, to do the same.
Editors' Duties:
- Publication Decision: The journal editor is responsible for deciding which of the submitted articles should be published. The editor is guided by the journal's editorial board policies and strictly observes legal requirements concerning defamation, copyright infringement, and plagiarism. The editor may consult the editorial board or collaborators in making decisions.
- Fair Play: The editor must evaluate manuscripts for their intellectual content, without regard to the authors' race, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, ethnic origin, nationality, or political philosophy.
- Confidentiality: The editor and any editorial staff must not disclose any information about a submitted manuscript to anyone other than the corresponding author, reviewers, potential reviewers, other editorial advisors, and the publisher, as appropriate.
- Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest: The editor must not use unpublished information in their own research without the express written consent of the author. The editor must refrain from evaluating manuscripts in which they have any conflicts of interest resulting from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships or connections with any of the authors, companies, or institutions connected to the articles.
- Participation and Cooperation in Investigations: The editor should take reasonable responsive measures when ethical complaints have been presented concerning a submitted manuscript or published paper.
Reviewers' Duties:
- Contribution to Editorial Decisions: Peer review assists the editor in making editorial decisions, and through editorial communications with the author, it may also assist the author in improving the article.
- Promptness: Any reviewer who feels unqualified to review the research reported in a manuscript or knows that its prompt review will be impossible should notify the editor and excuse themselves from the review process.
- Confidentiality: Any manuscripts received for review must be treated as confidential documents. They must not be shown to or discussed with others.
- Standards of Objectivity: Reviews should be conducted objectively, and reviewers should express their views clearly with supporting arguments.
- Acknowledgement of Sources: Reviewers should identify relevant published work that has not been cited by the authors. The reviewer should also alert the editor to any substantial similarity or overlap between the manuscript under consideration and any other published paper of which they have personal knowledge.
- Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest: Privileged information or ideas obtained through peer review must be kept confidential and not used for personal advantage. Reviewers should not consider manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest resulting from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships or connections with any of the authors, companies, or institutions connected to the papers.
Authors' Duties:
- Reporting Standards: Authors of original research reports should present an accurate account of the work performed and an objective discussion of its significance. Underlying data should be represented accurately in the paper. A paper should contain sufficient detail and references to permit others to replicate the work. Fraudulent or knowingly inaccurate statements constitute unethical behavior and are unacceptable.
- Originality and Plagiarism: The authors should ensure that their works are entirely original, and if the authors have used the work and/or words of others, these have been appropriately cited or quoted. Plagiarism in all its forms constitutes unethical publishing behavior and is unacceptable.
- Multiple, Redundant, or Concurrent Publication: An author should not, in general, publish manuscripts describing essentially the same research in more than one journal or primary publication. Submitting the same manuscript to more than one journal concurrently or publishing the same article in different journals constitutes unethical publishing behavior and is unacceptable.
- Acknowledgement of Sources: Proper acknowledgment of the work of others must always be given. Authors should cite publications that have been influential in determining the nature of the reported work. Information obtained privately, as in conversation, correspondence, or discussion with third parties, must not be used or reported without explicit, written permission from the source. Information obtained in the course of confidential services, such as manuscript refereeing or grant applications, must not be used without the explicit written permission of the author(s) of the work involved in those services.
- Authorship of the Paper: Authorship should be limited to those who have made a significant contribution to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the reported study. All those who have made significant contributions should be listed as co-authors. Others who have participated in certain substantive aspects of the research project should be acknowledged or listed as contributors. The corresponding author should ensure that all appropriate co-authors and no inappropriate co-authors are included on the paper, and that all co-authors have seen and approved the final version of the paper and have agreed to its submission for publication.
- Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest: All authors should disclose in their manuscripts any financial or substantive/material conflicts of interest that could be construed to influence the results or interpretation of their manuscripts. All sources of financial support for the project should be disclosed.
- Fundamental Errors in Published Works: When an author discovers a significant error or inaccuracy in their own published work, it is the author's obligation to promptly notify the journal editor or publisher and cooperate with the editor to retract or correct the paper.
