Abstract

Ovariohysterectomy (OH) can be defined as the surgical procedure in which the ovaries and uterus are removed. Although OH is a frequently performed procedure, there are complications that can happen as a result of inaccuracies in the surgical technique or in the choice of material for surgery. Therefore, the objective was to describe the case of a female dog who presented complications two years after an elective OH in which cotton threads were used to make vascular ligatures. In a veterinary clinic in Recife, a female dog was treated with urinary incontinence and abdominal pain. After clinical evaluation and performance of complementary exams (blood count, biochemistry, abdominal ultrasound, electrocardiogram, echocardiogram and computed tomography), an inflammatory granuloma was suspected, which could be due to the use of inappropriate suture material during surgery. In this perspective, an exploratory celiotomy was performed in order to remove the granulomas, which had adhesions in the omentum, intestine and ureter. At the end of surgery, the patient remained hospitalized for 48 hours to administer the medications and after this period, the animal showed improvement in clinical signs and was discharged. It is concluded that the use of cotton thread stimulated the formation of granulomas, requiring a new surgical procedure to remove them. In view of the above, the use of this material in surgery is not recommended.
