Cataracts are one of the leading causes of blindness in dogs. Due to the opacity of the lens, it is difficult or even impossible to visualize structures in the vitreous chamber, degeneration and hemorrhages. Therefore, ocular ultrasound becomes an important tool for evaluating ocular structures. The objective of this study was to perform ocular ultrasound in dogs of different breeds, ages, and degrees of cataract development to assess the presence of vitreous degeneration (VD), the condition of the lens, the location of the opacity, the positioning of the retina, its relationships and other changes that could impair the post-surgical period or prevent the facectomy procedure. Thirty-one animals participated in the study, with 57 eyes examined. The predominant breed was the Poodle, accounting for 45.16% (14/31) of the dogs evaluated. Ages ranged from 2 to 16 years, with 48.38% (15/31) being male and 51.62% (16/31) female. Regarding VD, 19.29% (11/57) of the eye bulbs presented with grade zero; the same percentage was found for grades 1 and 2, with 35.8% (20/57) each, and grade 3 was observed in 10.52% (6/57). Additionally, hyalosis was present in 12.56% (7/57) of the eyes, and partial retinal detachment in 3.5% (2/57). After analyzing the data, no correlation was found between the presence of cataracts and VD, nor between the degree of VD and the age of the animals.Downloads
