With the objective of evaluating the neurologic aspects of dogs with spinal diseases, this study used 14 adult dogs of different breeds and both genders. After diagnosis based on a meticulous clinical evaluation and radiographic and computed tomographic exams, animals underwent treatment with acupuncture and moxibustion during 120 days, once per week, for 30 minutes, totaling 20 sessions. Acupuncture points used were B23, B40, B60, VB20, VB30, VB34, VG1, VG2, VG20, E36, R3, IG4 and extra points Jiang Jia ji, Hua Tuo Jia Ji, and Wei Jian. On first evaluation, pain on palpation of the vertebral column was observed in all dogs, some with hyperesthesia. After the second session, the dogs did not show a reaction to pain. Of those undergoing treatment with acupuncture and moxibustion, 11 showed total functional progression with demonstrated return of ambulation without aid without falling; 2 had partial progression where they were able to ambulate without aid, but with ataxia and sporadic falling; and 01 showed unsatisfactory functional progression, where initial neurologic signs remained unchanged. The association of the needling technique and moxibustion was effective for managing pain and in the motor rehabilitation of dogs with different neurologic diseases.Downloads
