PANCREATIC CARCINOMA IN DOGS

Abstract

The clinical and pathological findings of pancreatic carcinoma in two dogs are described. The first case refers to a dog, four years old, with a history of anorexia, prostration and dyspnea, and died during clinical care. The second case refers to an eight-year-old undefined dog with a history of anorexia, adipsia, and emesis ten days later, without clinical improvement, and later euthanized. In both cases the animals were referred for necropsy, histopathology and immunohistochemistry. In case 1, the main macroscopic findings consisted of diffuse jaundice, and presence of expansive mass, white, soft and gelatinous in the pancreas and with metastasis to the stomach, liver, kidneys, abdominal muscle, intestine and skin. While in case 2, this mass involved only pancreas, omentum and liver. In both cases the histopathology revealed an unencapsulated, expansive mass, constituted by pleomorphic epithelial proliferation arranged in tubules, the interior of which has mucinous basophilic material. The same proliferation was observed in the stomach, liver, kidneys, abdominal muscle, intestine and skin (case 1) and omentum and liver (case 2). The diagnosis of pancreatic carcinoma was established through histopathological, histochemical and immunohistochemical findings. Among the pancreatic carcinomas are the papillary intraductal mucinous neoplasms, frequently diagnosed in humans and less commonly in dogs. This condition was observed in adult dogs with no defined breed in the Agreste of Paraíba and should be inserted in the differential diagnosis of pathologies of the gastrointestinal and hepatic tract of dogs
