Abstract

The objective was to evaluate the metaphylactic effect of diphenyl diselenide on weight gain, total protein, albumin, globulin and oxidative status in beef calves subjected to early weaning. Beef female calves (n=30), weighing 84.67±13.40kg, 60 to 110 days old, were distributed according to body weight criteria into: control group (CG, n=10): 2 mL of 0.9% NaCl solution; dimethylsulfoxide group (DMSOG, n=10): 2 mL of 99.2% dimethylsulfoxide; diphenyl diselenide group (DDG, n=10): 3 µmol/kg of 98% (PhSe)2, diluted in 2 mL of 99.2% dimethylsulfoxide. The interval between moments (M) was 14 days, and weight assessment and sample collection occurred at M1=baseline (-28), M2 (-14), M3 (0), M4 (14) and M5 (28), and the administration of treatments in M1, M2, M3. There was a significant effect for moment: average daily body weight gain (ADBGW) (P<0.0001), total protein (TP) (P<0.0001), globulin (GL) (P<0.0001), reduced glutathione (GSH) (P=0.0263), substances reactive to thiobarbiturium acid (TBARS) (P<0.0001) and ferric reducing antioxidant potential (FRAP) (P<0.0001), except for albumin (AL) (P=0.1374). Weaning continues to be a challenging management of body homeostasis, and supplementation with diphenyl diselenide in early weaned beef calves did not prevent changes in blood oxidative parameters, suggesting the occurrence of oxidative stress. However, there was an increase in weight gain, total protein and globulin in the group treated with diphenyl diselenide, suggesting that the use of this antioxidant at strategic moments can indeed condition animals, and also reduce some deleterious effects caused by weaning.
