Abstract

In animals, cholangiocarcinoma is a rare malignant tumor with an unfavorable prognosis. This case report described the first documented case of cholangiocarcinoma in a rabbit. The six-year-old rabbit had a seven-day history of incoordination. Physical examination revealed dehydration and hyporeflexia; despite emergency support, the rabbit died within 24 hours. Anatomopathological analysis revealed a liver with reduced volume, a diffusely irregular surface with multifocal off-white and reddish areas, and a firm consistency upon sectioning. Fragments of the liver were collected for histopathological analysis, which revealed the proliferation of neoplastic cells displaying morphological characteristics consistent with cholangiocarcinoma. The remaining parenchyma was disorganized, withareas of fibrosis, degeneration, and necrosis. This report highlights the importance of considering cholangiocarcinoma as a differential diagnosis in rabbits with liver pathology, with or without neurological signs. As the first report of this neoplasia in this species, these finds may contribute for future studies and clinical cases.
