Abstract

A case of grade I fibroblastic meningioma in a 13-year-old female Poodle dog is described. The patient presented clinical signs of apathy, reluctance to climb stairs, and tonic-clonic epileptic seizure. Hematological/biochemical examination indicated mild anemia, metabolic acidosis, hypoxemia, hyperglycemia, and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and cholesterol changes. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a notable homogeneous post-contrast enhancement in an extra-axial region located in the fronto-parietal area of the brain, measuring 1.95cm in the ventrodorsal axis, 2.12cm in the craniocaudal direction and 1.54cm in the lateral direction. The patient underwent a craniotomy to remove the neoplastic fragment, followed by cranioplasty. Histopathological analysis confirmed the benign nature of the tumor, characterized microscopically by elongated, spindle-shaped neoplastic cells, organized in bundles with presence of a significant collagenous matrix, presenting two mitoses per high-power field. After tumor removal, due to the complexity of the surgical intervention, the patient faced severe complications that led to an unfavorable prognosis, resulting in death. In summary, the diagnosis and treatment of brain neoplasms in dogs requires a multidisciplinary approach, highlighting the importance of continued research to improve the therapeutic options available for canine patients with brain tumors.
