Abstract

The Crested Caracara (Caracara plancus) is an obligate carnivorous bird of prey. In captivity, these birds often develop osteodystrophy due to inadequate nutrition during their early stages of life making them more prone to fractures as a result of osteometabolic disorders. A specimen of C. plancus was voluntarily delivered to the Wild Animals Sector of the Veterinary Hospital at Universidade Federal de Uberlândia (UFU), in Minas Gerais state, Brazil. The bird presented fractures in both its hind limbs and wings. X-rays of coelomic region, wings, and pelvic limbs were conducted. Initial treatment included the administration of opioids, anti-inflammatories and non-opioid analgesics, as well as implementing nutritional management consisting of a diet of dead rodent and supplemented with multivitamin complexes. A week after the initial treatment, a follow-up X-ray was performed. Due to the asymmetric nature of fractures, the veterinarians opted for osteotomy surgery. Given that it was an unprecedented surgical case with scarce literature, this report details the osteotomy technique used for the correction of a pathological fracture in a juvenile of this species. It also offers suggestions for similar clinical cases, contributing to the treatment of severe conditions.
