Platynosomiasis is a recurrent disease in Common Marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) and causes varying degrees of cholangitis, cholangiohepatitis and periportal fibrosis. The disease can be a problem for callitrichid conservation centers, so the clinicopathological characterization of the disease becomes necessary. The objective of this study was to describe a case of hepatomegaly resulting from chronic infection by Platynosomum spp. in Callithrix jacchus kept under human care. An adult female white-tufted marmoset, from the Primatology Center of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), was necropsied after being found dead in the enclosure. During the necropsy, it was noted that the animal was cachectic and had a bulging abdomen; the liver was enlarged (hepatomegaly) and covered approximately 80% of the abdominal cavity, varied from white to yellow and showed a clear lobular pattern. Microscopically, lymphoplasmacytic and eosinophilic, fibrosing, periportal cholangitis was noted, associated with intraductal flat and spindle-shaped adult worms and duct proliferation. This is the third report of platinosomiasis at the UFRN Primatology Center after sixteen years, and the chronic nature of the disease observed here implies that the disease persists in animals with non-specific clinical symptoms. Infection with Platynosomum spp. should be included as a differential diagnosis of cachectic diseases that occur with hepatomegaly.Downloads
