Radiographic exams are an important tool for investigating the cardiovascular system of birds, enabling qualitative and quantitative analysis of the cardiac silhouette. However, researche on falconid is rare. The study aimed to establish average values of the relationship between the thorax width (TW) and the heart width (HW) of the cardiac silhouette of healthy free-living crested caracara (Caracara plancus). For this purpose, X-rays were made of the coelomic cavity of 10 crested caracaras in the ventrodorsal and right laterolateral views. The analysis of the ventrodorsal views allowed the measurement of TW and HW, obtaining mean values of the TW:HW ratio 52.05 ± 6.60%. Due to similar biometrics to caracaras and because they were healthy in the screening tests, we consider that these values can be used as a reference for free-living adult crested caracaras and can be used as comparative data for diagnosing heart disease in the species, especially in captive caracaras.Downloads
